Gu Ga-eun: Prospects for the Practice and Alternatives of Village Education Communities
A village education community is a community where various stakeholders from schools and local communities cooperate and stand in solidarity through education. To address the educational problems of modern society, it is creating a vision for alternatives through educational practices based on cooperative relationships. There is an old African proverb that says, "It takes a village to raise a child." Hillary Clinton cited this proverb as the title of a book to emphasize the importance of the entire society, including the family and the village, in the education of children. She intended to convey that a series of processes involving mutual relationships, learning, and feeling within the communal space of a village are necessary for a child's growth. However, today's villages, having undergone industrialization and modernization, have changed everything from family structures to lifestyles, leading to the disintegration of relationships and the fragmentation of individuals. Villages based on care and symbiosis can no longer survive. Nevertheless, amidst these societal circumstances, networks of relationships that cooperate and stand in solidarity through a common purpose are newly forming modern villages. This study captures the practices of village education communities that are bound together by the common denominator of education and are seeking alternatives to confront the conflicts arising in modern society.
