Description

For many people, the God of divine violence depicted in the Old Testament has served as a stumbling block, preventing them from fully accepting the truth that flows through the Bible: “God is love.” As a result, some find it difficult to equate the God of justice in the Old Testament with the God of love in the New Testament, leading to spiritual confusion or, in severe cases, abandoning their faith. Furthermore, some seek justification in God for responding to violence that causes problems within their communities through violence. Thus, knowledge of the God revealed in the Bible has a profound impact on our faith and lives. The author presupposes that all Scripture is inspired by God (“breathed on”, 2 Timothy 3:16) and that Jesus Christ, who died on the cross—the very center of horrific violence—is the pinnacle of God’s love. God does not condone any violence and thoroughly rejects it. The author insightfully argues that, just as on the cross, the depiction of a violent God in the Old Testament actually serves to clearly demonstrate a non-violent and self-sacrificial God of love.
