I attended the IVP Book Fair this spring and purchased several books, including some I had long wanted to buy as well as others I was interested in but wasn't very familiar with. One of them was Gordon MacDonald's *What Leaders Live By*. I was able to easily choose this book because I had previously read *Ordering the Inner World and Spiritual Growth* with great interest (which I should read again). The original English title of *What Leaders Live By* is *Building Below the Waterline*. A
It covers important topics that a leader of a church community needs to know. It teaches practical lessons from the author's long experiences of success and failure. I highly recommend it.
The book is in poor condition. Pages are tearing out shortly after I bought it.
I bought this after thinking about which book to read and recommend to leaders. It focuses more on pastors than on church leaders.
Gordon MacDonald: What Do Leaders Live By?
Gordon MacDonald, a mentor to pastors, presents *What Leaders Live By*. Reflecting on his 40-year ministry, filled with both tears and laughter, the author shares the qualities of a leader and the foundations of leadership in candid and straightforward language. In particular, he introduces methods for building the inner world of a spiritual leader, which he personally discovered through trial and error. He challenges readers to build the body of Christ that stands firm over time. He resolves life's problems, which anyone may face, through the author's life experiences, the Word of God, and spiritual guidance. By examining the inner and outer lives in sequence, readers can discover topics such as "Mapping the Inner World," "Private Time for Public Leaders," "When Situations Worsen," and "The Right Way to Handle Church Conflict." This is not merely a guide for pastors, but a book for "leaders" who pursue authenticity and are willing to surrender their lives to God.
