Description

Gary Gerstle, a historian who has analyzed politics and social structures with a focus on immigration, race, and class, is the Paul Mellon Professor at the University of Cambridge and an authority in political economy and history. For more than 30 years, he has examined the histories of the New Deal and neoliberalism through the distinctive concept of “political order.” In 1989, Gerstle published The Rise and Fall of the New Deal Order, 1930–1980, an analysis of the New Deal order, introducing the new concept of “political order.” The term “New Deal order” became widely used to emphasize the Democratic Party’s dominance in American politics from the 1930s through the 1960s. Thirty-four years after that book, he published its follow-up, The Rise and Fall of the Neoliberal Order (2022). Literally translated as The Rise and Fall of the Neoliberal Order, it was published in Korea as New Deal and Neoliberalism: How Does a New Political Order Emerge? (Arte Philos series, no. 28). The book traces the history of neoliberalism, from its beginnings to its unraveling, as it shaped the United States and the world over the past half-century. It is distinctive for revisiting that history through the multidimensional lens of “political order,” a framework Gerstle introduced more than 30 years ago and helped establish in public discourse. This perspective makes it possible to offer an unusually insightful view among the many books on neoliberalism.

Gary Gerstle, New Deal and Neoliberalism. Politics, culture, and the economy are always organically connected. Reading this book reminded me of that again. Economics was not a field I particularly liked when I studied it, but lately I have started taking an interest in it from several angles. The author, Gary Gerstle, is an American historian who mainly studies political economy. As its title suggests, New Deal and Neoliberalism also covers modern and contemporary American economic history.

This was a substantial book that kept me company in May and June. I am used to reading quickly, so what is it about this book that made me slow down and take it in piece by piece? Perhaps it is because the author, translator, and editor all work so well together. Around Chapter 6, “The Arrogant Rise,” one thought came together for me. It may still be an incomplete, small conclusion. The events of the past century carried out by the United States, a democratic country joined to capital under the

There are signs of change in the current era, represented by neoliberalism. This book helps explain what is happening.
