Friedrich Hölderlin: The Death of Empedocles

*The Death of Empedocles: A Tragedy* (Der Tod des Empedokles), a compilation of the plays and treatises of the ill-fated genius Hölderlin (1770–1843)—who lived half his life under the shackles of mental derangement—has been published by Munhak & Jiseongsa. Although he was far from recognized in his time and lived an unfortunate life suffering from schizophrenia for half his lifetime, he was resurrected as a modern poet in the early 20th century as his late poems were discovered and re-evaluated. Hölderlin is the German poet most frequently translated and introduced over the past half-century. Although the play *The Death of Empedocles* is an unfinished work, it holds a significant place in the history of German literature as it demonstrates Hölderlin's progress toward mature late literature. His later works contributed greatly to German Idealist philosophy and Romantic literature, and had a profound influence on thinkers and poets of the 20th and 21st centuries. The tragedy *The Death of Empedocles*, which remains in three drafts, and the treatises containing theoretical reflections on it, prove that Hölderlin was not only one of the most outstanding poets who wrote in German, but also one of the greatest thinkers.
