Eugene Smith et al.: Eugene Smith
The "Yeolhwadang Photography Pocket Series," which introduces the lives and works of carefully selected representative photographers from Korea and abroad, has consistently been loved for its compact format and affordable price. The charm of these pocket-sized photo books is special, with readers saying they have developed a love for collecting them one by one, find comfort flipping through them on their commutes or travels, or give them as heartfelt gifts to loved ones. Although small in size, its content is professional and substantial. From artist profiles written by prominent critics and writers of the time to major works accompanied by photo captions, and even a chronology summarizing the photographer's entire life, it is worthy of being called a "small museum of photographic art." Starting with the 41st volume in 2017, the series improved upon previous shortcomings with a new design and binding, and these changes have been applied to subsequent revised editions and new releases. The revised edition of *Eugene Smith*, published this time, is also being re-released with a new cover and updated information to correct errors and provide the latest updates. W. Eugene Smith (1918–1978) was a “master of the photo essay,” and his strong independence and passion for art made him a heroic figure to many, and at times a source of inspiration. Russell Miller described Smith, who lived a compulsive life driving himself to the brink, as follows: “He was a man of a big, broad heart who declared that it was his mission to document the human condition through writing and photography until his death.” Smith consistently produced images denouncing war, suffering, and social injustice with remarkable focus and passion.
