This is a book by the artist who painted the folk-art Qilin painting presented to President Xi Jinping during President Lee Jae-myung’s visit to China! I’d always been interested in folk painting, but seeing the artist’s Qilin painting in the news made me realize how beautiful Korean folk art is, so I picked up Our Folk Paintings Around Us. This is a book by the artist who painted the Qilin folk-art work that President Lee Jae-myung gave President Xi Jinping. The content isn’t difficult, and anyone can read it easily, so I’m going to look through it with my kids and talk about it. Looking forward to reading it!
There are unfamiliar paintings, and the book teaches you about folk art through plenty of material you can learn from just by looking. I love it. I’ll keep it and learn from it!
Our Folk Paintings: A Vivid Portrait of Our Ancestors’ Lives. We know many old tales, but seem to know fewer traditional Korean folk paintings. These paintings, passed down among ordinary people, can be hard to encounter unless you seek them out. Books on Western art are easy to find, and I often show them to children, but apart from works by famous painters, it has been difficult to introduce them to our own traditional art. I was delighted that Our Folk Paintings Around Us gave me that
I’ve become more interested in Korean culture lately, so I’m delighted to find the stories behind Korean folk paintings and such beautiful works all in one book. It’s excellent. I hope lots of people read it.
I bought it because it looked so fun. Is the cover normally a little grimy? The corners are dark, as if something rubbed off on it at Kyobo, and it won’t come off very well...
Eom Jae-kwon: Folk paintings in our midst
Paintings that have always stayed by our side. Folk painting, which began to develop in the Joseon era for decorating living spaces and ceremonial spaces, was made and circulated more widely in the late Joseon period as many commoner admirers emerged. For a time, it was not properly recognized for its art-historical value because it was copied from preparatory drawings by unknown artists. In modern times, however, its value has risen around the world as researchers interpret and study its collective artistry, original composition of subjects, use of color, and many symbolic meanings. There are two broad ways to appreciate folk paintings. One is to examine the images in a painting and consider their meanings, thereby 'interpreting' it; the other is to look at folk painting purely from an artistic perspective, examining its expression and coloring techniques. Arguments over which approach is correct are not very meaningful. What matters more is that folk painting developed alongside 'common people' in Korean art history as an art of the people, and that it was always around us as decorative art. It adorned places and objects throughout our homes and daily lives, from wardrobes, pillowcases, and blankets to commonly used fans and thimbles. Folk painting may have seeped into the deepest parts of our lives because the messages of hope in these works resonate so deeply in our hearts. Artist Um Jae-gwon has spent more than 40 years working to make folk painting widely known, and now a book has been published containing more than 80 generous examples of paintings he rendered himself with a modern brush.
