Description

Shedding light on the history of Korean social insurance, another pillar of the Korean economy. The concluding volume of ‘Korean Miracle,’ published by the Compilation Committee of ‘Economic Miracles Heard in Voices.’ “Korean Miracle 5: Korea’s Social Insurance, Its Arduous Journey”, the fifth and final installment of the ‘Korean Miracle’ series—a Korean economic history series recorded based on the vivid voices of economic elders—has been published by Nanam. This book reviews the history of Korean social welfare, particularly social insurance, which has been a crucial pillar supporting and driving the Korean economy but has been overshadowed by economic development and has not received proper attention. It also explores the desirable relationship between growth and welfare. The book features the stories of living witnesses to Korean social insurance: Kim Jong-dae, former Chairman of the National Health Insurance Service; Kim Jong-in, former Minister of Health and Social Affairs; Park Nam-hoon, former Senior Secretary for Policy Coordination at the Blue House; Seo Sang-mok, former Minister of Health and Welfare; Lee Jae-kap, Minister of Employment and Labor; Lee Jong-yoon, former Vice Minister of Health and Welfare; Jung Byung-sook, former Vice Minister of Labor; Jin Nyum, former Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs; and Cha Heung-bong, former Minister of Health and Welfare.

We can hear the voices of visionaries and policymakers who agonized over establishing social insurance with a vision for the future during a period of development when the ideology of "growth first, distribution later" dominated Korean society. Its value as a historical source cannot be overlooked either.
