Pixar Storytelling for Creators is a writing guide that presents Pixar animation's storytelling techniques in ten themes. I have loved Pixar since childhood and still enjoy its films as an adult. I wondered how Pixar keeps making works every few years that make me cry, move me, and entertain me. I cannot write down everything, but two techniques impressed me most. First is Pixar's distinctive opening sequence (flashback). My favorite Pixar animation is Up! Its opening quietly shows Carl and
I usually enjoy Pixar animations such as Soul, Up, Inside Out, and Elemental. While watching, I marvel at how they weave precious life lessons into short animations, and have wondered how they do it. Dean Movshowitz: Pixar Storytelling
The most basic way to write a great story is to find a good model, analyze its strengths, and appropriately incorporate them into your own work. To that end, a new ‘Storytelling Secrets’ series has arrived, digging into the ‘recipes for success’ of brands that have become film studios people ‘trust and watch’ thanks to their polished stories and distinct personalities. The first subject is Pixar, the animation studio loved around the world for its stable, well-structured storylines, original and fantastical worlds, compelling developments, and resonant messages. Analyzing many of Pixar’s masterpieces, including “Toy Story”, “Finding Nemo”, “Ratatouille”, “WALL-E”, “Up”, “Inside Out”, “Coco”, “Soul”, and “Elemental”, this book introduces effective storytelling techniques that story creators can put to use right away. The book organizes Pixar’s know-how used in every stage of story creation, from discovering a story’s core idea to building characters, conflicts, and worlds, developing the story and setting its ending, and conveying its themes. Each chapter presents storytelling principles commonly used in Pixar films along with film examples that explain them concretely. These vivid examples not only bring back the fun and emotion of the films, but also make abstract writing principles easy and intuitive to understand.
