Dankook University Mongolia Research Institute: Mongolian Diplomatic History 1911–2021 in Events and Chronology
Korea and Mongolia have shared a deep historical and cultural understanding for centuries. In the early twentieth century, as imperialism faded and nations embracing socialism and communism emerged, the world entered a Cold War between them and the democratic bloc. Korea belonged to the democratic bloc and Mongolia to the socialist bloc, and ideology completely blocked relations between them. From the mid-1980s, the socialist bloc began to collapse rapidly, and Mongolia underwent political transformation. On March 26, 1990, Mongolia adopted democracy and established formal diplomatic relations with Korea; 33 years have now passed. Since September 2020, the Institute for Mongolian Studies at Dankook University has conducted the Ministry of Education and National Research Foundation of Korea's Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute Support Program, Strategic Regional Studies track. It collects and analyzes indicators and research on Mongolia's politics, economy, and society to build a regional studies database, then studies the Mongolian government's policymaking system with the aim of advancing cooperation between Korea and Mongolia. To support that goal, the institute plans to select and translate exemplary Mongolian materials for its translation series.
