Gou rixin, rì rì xīn, yòu rì xīn: “If you can renew yourself one day, do so day after day, and keep renewing yourself.” The Great Learning, one of the Four Books, is a classic often read first, guiding study and wise engagement with the world. Zhu Xi saw it as the first classic to read because it sets life goals and values. Part of the Confucian Book of Rites, its author is unknown. Han Yu first showed interest; later Sima Guang separated chapter 42 from the original 49-chapter Book of Rites as The Broad Meaning of the Great Learning. Zhu Xi’s commentary, dividing it into one classic chapter and ten commentary chapters, spread it widely. Copying the Great Learning follows Zhu Xi’s text and interpretation. The Three Principles and Eight Steps: the book describes teaching at the Taixue, the highest school, setting three aims for an ideal leader and eight steps. Zhu Xi’s principles are manifesting bright virtue, renewing the people, and resting in the highest good; the steps are investigating things, extending knowledge, making intentions sincere, rectifying the mind, cultivating oneself, regulating family, governing the state, and bringing peace to the world—a path to an ideal community grounded in virtuous rule.
