Christian Kracht's novel *Here I Am in the Sunlight and in the Shadows* represents a new current in modern German literature. In 1917, Lenin does not board the train from Zurich to Saint Petersburg, and a revolution does not occur in Russia. Instead, a communist revolution takes place in Switzerland. German bombers strike the underground heart of the Swiss Soviet Republic, and while East Africa enjoys the benefits of civilization under Swiss support, human evolution regresses. This novel presents an "alternate history" in which war has continued for nearly a century since World War I. Furthermore, it projects upon this backdrop the present day, which has become a colony of modern civilization that knows no goal other than expansive self-reproduction. Through ingenious ideas and concise sentences, the author urges an awakening to reality.
