Choi Seo-hae: red flame (external)
Choe Seo-hae's literature most typically embodies the characteristics of the New Tendency literary theory. Generally, when thinking of Choe Seo-hae, class conflict comes to mind first. However, while it is true that Choe Seo-hae focused on class exploitation and the resulting conflicts, he paid equally deep attention to national issues. Strictly speaking, for Choe Seo-hae, class issues and national issues are inextricably intertwined. In short, in Choe Seo-hae's literature, the national issue is the class issue, and the class issue is the national issue. The setting of Choe Seo-hae's early literature is almost entirely "Gando." Manchuria, symbolized by Gando, was a space where national and class contradictions and conflicts were superimposed for the Korean people. Choe Seo-hae lived in Manchuria for over five years, from 1918 to 1923, and experienced all manner of things. This experience in Manchuria became the foundational experience of Choe Seo-hae's literature, permeating all his works directly and indirectly.
