Jebiwon, Andong’s Cultural Code Combining Maitreya and Seongju Faith. Andong Jebiwon earned its name due to the presence of the Maitreya Buddha depicted atop a majestic rock cliff. As the Andong region, where Hwangjangmok, Cheongjangmok, and Chunyangmok trees gather, became a hub for timber and master carpenters, Jebiwon gained renown as the home of pine seeds and the ancestral home of the Seongju deity. One must pay attention to the long-standing historical significance of the Jebiwon code—crafted by shamanistic songs and folk songs that proclaim the origin of the Seongju deity as Jebiwon in Andong—to clearly see the Yonghwa World that the Maitreya Buddha of Jebiwon gazes upon. Human history endures only when we reflect upon the spirit of respect for all living things that the Seongju faith has accumulated.
