A Guide to Understanding Beonam Chae Je-gong!
Chae Je-gong: Beonamjip 5
*Beonamjip* is a collection of poems and prose by Chae Je-gong, a civil official of the late Joseon Dynasty. As the leader of the Cheongnam faction, succeeding Yi Hwang, Jeong Gu, Heo Mok, and Yi Ik, Chae Je-gong earned the trust of King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo, who advocated for impartiality amidst the factional strife between the Noron and Soron parties. In particular, he received special treatment from King Jeongjo in recognition of his leading role in protecting Crown Prince Sado. During his long career in government service, he implemented reform policies such as the Sinhae Tonggong, the abolition of the right of officials in the Ministry of Personnel to appoint officials, and the construction of the Suwon fortress. He left behind numerous poems, memorials, and correspondences. In the case of poetry, he compiled and edited nine poetry collections, including *Dangurok* and *Mangmirok*, along with other poems. Given that King Jeongjo examined the author's manuscripts and even composed poems in 1791 (the 15th year of his reign), it appears that he undertook the task of compiling his poetry and prose up to that point in his late sixties while living in seclusion in places such as Myeongdeoksan and Noryang. It seems that he also organized and arranged the poetry and prose from that time until his death at the age of eighty, leaving them behind. The main collection consists of 59 volumes in 27 books. At the very beginning are the *Imperial Compilation of the Manuscript of Poems and Prose by Beonam*, composed by King Jeongjo in 1791 upon reviewing the author's work during his lifetime, as well as the *Imperial Regulations* established in 1800 and the accompanying notes by his disciples, including Yi Jeong-un, demonstrating King Jeongjo's interest in this collection. Volumes 20 through 27 contain 152 memorials. This section, where the author is particularly highly regarded, features petitions for resignation from office dating from 1748 onwards, arranged in chronological order.
