This book makes you think a lot about empathy. It traces its roots to explore the origins of communication. It looks for the reasons behind it, how it can be used, and what it may look like in the future. How teenagers carry these ideas into the world is up to them, but I hope they all grow into adults who communicate well, with empathy and understanding.
An Introduction to Communication Studies (Chae Hee-sang, Bom Majung). I studied advertising communication design and journalism, public relations, and video studies in college and graduate school. I once studied subjects closely related to communication, but honestly, if someone asked me, 'What is communication studies? What do you learn in that field?' it would be hard to answer clearly in one sentence. So what does communication mean? The dictionary defines it as sharing information such as
Why do people want to communicate with one another? The author defines communication studies as 'the study of the process of sending, receiving, and interpreting messages so people can understand the world and others and express their feelings or opinions' (p. 20). Starting with the history and meaning of communication, this book goes into great detail about the role of communication studies in the new media era, questions about career choices, and the paths available after graduation. Chae Hee-sang: First Communication Studies
Many teenagers still don't really know what interests them, what kind of career they want to pursue, or what makes them happiest. They receive very little introduction to the many fields of study beyond school subjects or the careers available after graduation. Bom Majung's Career Lessons for Teens series was created to help young people discover their aptitudes and plan and shape their futures. The fifth book in the series, An Introduction to Communication Studies, following An Introduction to Geography, was written by Professor Chae Hee-sang, who teaches in the School of Media, Film, Advertising, and Public Relations at Hanshin University. It explores the history and meaning of communication, the role of communication studies in the new media era, and possible career paths after graduating with a degree in communication studies.
