Where is the new civilization to replace human civilization, which has reached its limits due to epidemics, terrorism, and war? Bestselling author Bernard Werber's new full-length novel, *Civilization* (2 volumes), has been published by Open Books, translated by Jeon Mi-yeon, a translator specializing in French literature. The novel is set in a world devastated by terrorism and war, where billions have died from epidemics. While this might have been merely a common dystopian backdrop when the novel was first published in France in 2019, the setting feels all the more vivid to us living in the COVID-19 era. *Civilization* is a novel in which Bastet, the cat protagonist from *The Cat*, embarks on an adventure in a world where human civilization has hit the brink. The cats' primary goal is to survive in a harsh environment by fending off attacks from exponentially multiplying rat swarms, but their ultimate goal is to build a new civilization to replace human civilization. Along the way, various animals they encounter—such as pigs, cows, dogs, and pigeons—become both allies and enemies of the cats. Will Bastet be able to foster communication and cooperation among different animal species and achieve her goal? This work is also a coming-of-age story about the female cat, Bastet. More charming and lovable than any other protagonist in Werber's works, she possesses both distinct strengths and weaknesses. Let us watch together as Bastet embarks on her bold challenge to establish a civilization. A message for humanity embedded within a cat's adventure, *Civilization* is a work that can be read independently without difficulty, but it is a story that originated from *The Cat*. This narrative, encompassing both *The Cat* and *Civilization*, is planned as a three-part series.

The days when mice would run away at the mere sight of a cat are gone in this book. The setting is a world where human civilization has reached its limits due to terror, war, and infectious diseases, and where progress as a human-centered civilization has ceased. A civilization where humans are not the central figures—while it may not be called a civilization in the truest sense—must be occupied by someone else. True to Bernard Werber's style, it is "Cat Civilization" that leads human

“If it is something you can do or not do without consequence, choose to do it. The worst possible outcome of doing it is simply realizing why you shouldn't have done it in the first place.” p. 142 - From *Civilization* - The quoted sentence is one of the memorable lines spoken by the protagonist Bastet's mother. The lines were so good that I wanted to compile them into a collection of quotes. *Civilization* follows the adventures of Bastet, the cat protagonist from Bernard Werber's previous

The story was unique and fun! Since the protagonist is a cat, it was exciting to see the novel unfold from the cat's perspective. Although it is a sequel to the previous work “Cat”, I liked that the story is independent, so readers can fully understand it even without having read the previous book. The protagonist Bastet's personality was very multi-dimensional, which I think helped me stay focused while reading the novel.

I really enjoyed reading *Cat* 1 and 2, so when I heard *Civilization* was the sequel, I was like, "Oh no... I probably won't remember it, what should I do?" But Bernard Werber is truly a genius; he summarized it so well that even someone who hasn't read *Cat* 1 and 2 could understand it, and all my memories came flooding back! Haha. He is truly an amazing person!! (I was wondering if I should go reread *Cat* 1 and 2, but you've relieved my worries haha.) I first became interested in Bernard

In this situation, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, a dystopian book based on the premise that human civilization has collapsed doesn't feel like mere fiction. In the current reality, where the whole world has to wear masks because of all the foolish mistakes we made, there is no guarantee that a worse situation won't occur. Could it be true that a world where animals rule over humans might come in the future? Could a day come when humans are judged by animals, just like in the book? The

The novel is set in a world devastated by terror and war, where billions have died from an epidemic. Living in the COVID era, this setting feels even more vivid to us today. Every time I read it, I am filled with admiration for his genius.

With the advent of the COVID-19 era, we are already facing a daily life that was previously unimaginable. Perhaps the possibility that an unexpected creature, like Troy in the novel, could instantly snatch away our daily lives is not entirely close to zero. As I watched scenes of rats swarming the entire region and breeding repeatedly, I found myself occasionally wondering why we consider a society centered on humans to be the "righteous society." Isn't the charm of Bernard's novels that they
