Korea has maintained diplomatic relations with China for over 2,000 years, navigating the Sinocentric order and the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape of East Asia. However, this long diplomatic history does not guarantee a clear direction or ease when applied to modern diplomatic relations. The conflict between Korea and China over the deployment of THAAD in 2017 vividly demonstrated how modern diplomatic relations shift rapidly based on national interests amidst a complex international environment. “As the national interests of the two countries clashed, China attempted to resolve the issue through coercive means instead of diplomatic solutions, and Korea’s response was ineffective.
