Description

A commemorative reflection on Immanuel Kant, a leading humanist thinker, for the 300th anniversary of his birth. The Human Condition gathers essays that Baek Jong-hyun, translator of the Korean edition of Kant's collected works (Arcanet), published over more than half a century of reading Kant, distilling the essentials of Kant's humanist thought. The familiar saying that all thought before Kant converged in him and all thought after him flowed from him captures the revolutionary place of his philosophy. Its enduring force, however, lies above all in grounding human dignity and elevating human worth through humanism. Remembering Kant (1724–1804) in an era when traditional humanism is misunderstood as “post,” the author again asks what a human being is and ought to be. For Kant, autonomy is what makes a human being human. The most basic requirement for a living being to sustain itself is intellectual activity; intelligence is a minimal condition of humans as animals. But autonomy, or freedom, is the deeper principle that makes a human a person. It is the foremost element of humanity and the condition of personhood. As persons, human beings also have rights: human rights.

This isn't a book written to welcome beginners. You need to know Kant's philosophy to some extent already to understand it.

I've bought and read almost all of Professor Baek Jong-hyun's books on Kant. I work and live an ordinary life, but I love philosophy and study Kant. His books have helped me a lot, from the easiest and most entertaining introductions to extensive, in-depth works. I noticed another one had come out, so I bought it and am leaving a review.

Human judgments and actions grounded in metaphysical or rational ethics aspire to the dignity and value of both subject and object. Within this orientation, an ethics of being can break fixed frameworks and resonate with unethical affect, expanding into a space and time of creative enjoyment. The book crosses the boundary between the human as rational subject and the object as a site of collaborative distance; it also uses the devaluation of ethical being to foreground the value of unethical
