Description

This complete collection gathers stories by Atsushi Nakajima, one of Japan's most popular authors and the writer most often included in Japanese language textbooks. It surveys his dense, varied work: short stories expressing the profound world of the East in elegant prose, including The Strange Tale, The Moon over the Mountain, The Disciple, The Master, and The Story of a Demon; exotic works set around Samoa in the South Pacific, such as Light, Wind, and Dreams; autobiographical pieces set in colonial-era Gyeongseong, including The Tiger Hunt, A Scene with a Policeman, Teacher Donan, and The Diary of a Wanderer; and student exercises published in school magazines. Nakajima wrote fiction from high school, but devoted less than a year to writing as an author. At the last moment of his fragile life, he left the desperate wish, “I want to write, I want to write, I want to pour out everything in my head,” and passed away. Though chronic asthma made his days painful, he never stopped probing life's meaning while wrestling with metaphysical anxiety about the uncertainty of existence. His fiction is limited enough to fit in one book, yet his work has not faded with time and is seen as richly reflecting real relationships today, nearly a century later. His pure stories, written in absolute solitude by someone who tried “to have the heart of an ant and sing the song of a cicada,” shine like stars in modern Japanese literature. Now the beautiful microcosm of Atsushi Nakajima unfolds before us.

At last!! The next author is here. I am truly grateful to the publisher. I have been collecting these books ever since the Akutagawa collection. I hope we get Kunikida Doppo or Edogawa Rampo too...
