Rimbaud’s original text is included, which is useful for reference. The notes are also helpful.
I once heard that walking somewhere new greatly helps develop the imagination. But when circumstances keep me from going somewhere unfamiliar, I open Rimbaud’s poetry. It always feels unfamiliar; each reading feels like traveling somewhere new. When I read his poetry, I become someone wandering through an unknown world. But walking in fog forever is not always comfortable, so I need commentary. I was delighted that this collection includes commentary with every poem. I think I can keep it
Arthur Rimbaud: Rimbaud Illumination
Rimbaud, the French poetic genius who wrote for only a short time yet left an extraordinarily deep mark. Rimbaud is poetry itself; his works are the essence of mystery. Illuminations, the final work he left as he departed from literature and Europe, is a sphinx’s riddle posed to us. Everything about the collection is shrouded in mystery, from its creation and composition to its sequence, form, and title. To keep readers from losing their way in Rimbaud’s ‘forest of symbols,’ this book includes commentary by Professor Kim Jong-ho, who earned a degree through Rimbaud research and has taught literature at university, along with the English translation he worked on for many years, presented beside the French original.
