Ye Gi-sim: Introduction to Empathy
*Introduction to Textual Collation* presents a methodology for the most accurate approach to the original text. *Introduction to Textual Collation* is a translation of Ni Qixin's *Outline of Textual Collation*, published by Peking University Press. Textual collation is the academic discipline of comparing and contrasting multiple editions of a book containing a single subject matter to examine similarities and differences in wording and to accurately correct the original text. To conduct accurate translation and research on ancient Chinese texts, the first requirement is to establish the text. Since academic work—such as research, translation, or indexing—conducted without correcting textual errors through collation will inevitably result in erroneous outcomes, collation is the essential first step. This book covers the historical development of collation in ancient Chinese texts, as well as the fundamental principles and methods of the process. In particular, a key feature of this book is that it establishes general rules for collation alongside various practical examples. By extensively selecting empirical cases of various ancient texts and elucidating theoretical discourses and arguments, this book introduces the fundamental knowledge and functions of text collation. Based on this foundation, it gathers the experiences of scholars throughout history who collated ancient texts—rather than relying on personal superficial opinions—from a wealth of practical examples. Furthermore, by analyzing the causes of potential errors that may occur during the collation process, it derives the principles and rules of text collation. As the first specialized text on text collation to be translated into Korean, *Introduction to Text Collation* is expected to be of great assistance to experts and researchers in the relevant field.
