Anthony Pagden: A world at war

A history of the history of anti-thesis in the East and the West, the world of war. The book deals with the history of the 2,500-year war in East and West, explaining the differences in ethnic groups that still exist, despite the growing loss of them. Professor Pagden, an expert in European and Spanish history, looks for the reasons why East and West are divided against democratic principles, secularism versus neo-theocracy, Christian versus Islam. According to this book, the East and the West distinction are an old-fashioned legacy. As with all geographic distinctions, the Eastern and Western concepts are relative. Dividing the Orient into the Near East, Middle East and Far East is a 19th-century expression built on India under British rule. These East/Western divisions have led to constant war. The war, which began with the Western mission of civilizing the world through conquest, was steadily carried on by Rome, the Crusades, and 19th-century imperialism. The author argues that the differences in East and West are not just political and religious issues. To understand the past and present of the East and the West, we must go beyond the Crusades, the birth of Islam, the origin of Christianity and to the fifth century B.C.E. Europe was born from Asia, and for centuries two continents shared a history. But the war of conquest by Persian Emperor Xerxes began and has not stopped since.
