Andre Aciman: Homo Irealis
Homo Irères, an unrealistic human being, had left his home Alexandria, from the 14-year-old boy in a photograph of France longing for France, to the series of stings in the city he faced in the subway, the empty Roman synthography, the remnant of St. Petersburg, the traces of New York City with thousands of artist footprints, and C. P. Capafi, W. G. The lives of artists like John Sloane, Eric Lomer, Beethoven, Clotto, Coere, Marcel Proust, Fernando Pessa, and the work they left give us a glimpse of the imagination of the people who have been living and living before us and who are exploring the meaning of the past and the time ahead, and building new areas out of control of that time. I have no definite boundaries between night and day, ever and never. There is no boundary between what is and what is not, what is happening and what will not happen in unrealistic writing. The essays in this book about artists, writers and merchants may have nothing to do with my identity or their identity in a variety of ways, and my interpretation of them could be completely wrong. But the reason I'm hurting them is to make a better interpretation of myself. The unrealistic writing that forms the basis of this book is not about the present, the past, and the future.
