Alexander Solzhenitsyn: The Gulag Archipelago 3

The complete set of *The Gulag Archipelago* by Solzhenitsyn, the 1970 Nobel Prize winner in Literature, has been published as part of Open Books' World Literature Series. Published by the Paris YMCA in 1973, *The Gulag Archipelago* shocked the entire world immediately upon its release. In Korea, the late Professor Kim Hak-soo undertook the translation, and parts of the work were first introduced domestically in 1974. The first edition, consisting of six volumes, was published by Open Books in 1988. Open Books previously produced a limited special edition of *The Gulag Archipelago* in 2017 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution; at that time, instead of reprinting the old edition, they undertook a comprehensive review and revision of the content for the first time in 30 years. The edition being published as part of the World Literature Series is based on this revision. Specifically, various errors have been corrected, and changes to Korean orthography and Russian transliteration have been reflected. Additionally, the names of Soviet agencies such as the GPU, NKVD, and KGB have been organized and written in alphabetical abbreviations for easier recognition. In particular, over 50 illustrations from the original text have been included for the first time. Through these illustrations, the faces of those executed, the scenery within the camp grounds, and images of Solzhenitsyn during his time as a prisoner come to life even more vividly. *The Gulag Archipelago* is a book that thoroughly exposes the most brutal and shocking aspects of the past 100 years of Russian history. Ultimately, this book revealed the immoral reality of the Soviet regime both internally and externally, leading to the collapse of the system. In reflecting on the history of the 20th century and regarding the issue of power destroying the lives of ordinary people, there is no more powerful and shocking reference material than this.
