Description

*Reading Don Quixote* is a work released two years after the complete translation of the novel, capturing all the hidden messages of *Don Quixote* that could not be fully conveyed in the 840 footnotes used during the translation. It not only examines Cervantes' life and the times but also delves deeply into the author's intentions and the aesthetics of the work, which are obscured within parody and allusion. This commentary is composed of two parts. Part 1 discusses *Don Quixote* as revealed by Cervantes on the surface. In accordance with the author's purpose of writing as a parody of existing chivalric novels, it introduces these novels, clarifies existing evaluations of *Don Quixote* and the structure of the work, and organizes the aspects of parody while summarizing and explaining the content. Part 2 reveals the messages that Cervantes concealed under the pretext of parodying chivalric novels, organized by theme. The author emphasizes that the *Don Quixote* we have read is merely the tip of the iceberg, and that the true essence of the book can only be appreciated by examining the reality of Cervantes's time alongside his reading list. The small themes presented in this book serve as clues to decipher the body of the iceberg known as *Don Quixote*.

“There is not a single story in *Don Quixote* that has landed there by chance.” *Reading Don Quixote*, a comprehensive commentary released two years after the complete translation of the work, captures all the hidden messages of *Don Quixote* that could not be fully conveyed in the 840 footnotes added during the translation. It not only examines Cervantes’s life and era but also delves deeply into the author’s intentions and the aesthetics of the work, which are obscured by parody and allusion.
